Mugwort, Lavender and Frankincense in mediation

All three oils used in this balm have a long history of use in meditation and spiritual practice. I tend to see herbs as ‘beings’, often with very distinct personalities. In this balm I see them on a journey into the higher dimensions.

Mugwort is the driver, she takes you where you need to go, she opens the dimensions and allows access to realms you may not be able to enter without her help. Lavender is the hostess keeping you calm, comfortable and relaxed while on the journey. Lavender relaxes the body so its easier to enter a higher state. Frankincense is the guide or diplomat who can elevate the spiritual experiences and facilitate a connection with the divine. Frankincense can introduce to the divine within yourself. The three together can facilitate a safe, direct and higher experience of meditation.

Mugwort in meditation

In ancient Greece and Rome, mugwort was associated with Artemis and Diana, goddesses of the moon and the hunt. It was believed that placing mugwort under one's pillow could induce lucid dreams and enhance dream recall.

Several Native American tribes are known to have used mugwort in spiritual and medicinal practices. Among certain tribes, mugwort was used in ceremonies and rituals aimed at gaining insights through dreams. It was sometimes included in dream pillows or smoked in ceremonial pipes

In Celtic and Druidic traditions, mugwort was considered a sacred herb with protective and visionary qualities. Druids were believed to have used mugwort in their rituals, and it was associated with divination and astral travel. In European folklore and traditional medicine, mugwort was believed to have protective properties. It was used as a charm against evil spirits and for enhancing dreams. Dream pillows containing mugwort were used in some European folk traditions.

Lavender in meditation

Lavender is associated with emotional balance and stability. Incorporating lavender into your meditation can contribute to a sense of emotional well-being, helping you manage your emotions and cultivate a positive mindset. Lavender can also contribute to a heightened sense of awareness and presence.

One of my favourite teachers Pam Montgomery, author of the book ‘Plant Spirit Healing’ uses lavender to release old trauma. She is actually running a free class this Sunday on releasing old trauma with lavender if your interested and an absolutely divine sounding lavender initiation in July the South of France! (I’ve put that one on the vision board!!)

Frankincense in meditation

Frankincense has a rich history of use in spiritual and religious practices, including ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, Persian, and various Judeo-Christian traditions dating back thousands of years. It is derived from the resin of the Boswellia tree and has been valued for its aromatic properties, believed to have a connection to divine or sacred realms. It is considered a symbol of purification, prayer, and spirituality. Physically it is used for pain, swelling and inflammation in the body.

Which Herb would you like to do next?

This week is our last week doing Mugwort so next week we start a totally new herb. Im thinking along the lines of Gotu Kola, Purslane or Nettle. Let me know in the comments what herb you would like to know about next.

I would like to acknowledge the Kabbi Kabbi/Gubbi Gubbi peoples on who’s lands I live and work. I acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded and pray this truth be acknowledged and respected by all who live, work and govern these lands.
